What Is Alexandrite

About Alexandrite

Alexandrite is one of the rarest and most coveted gemstones in the world, famous for its extraordinary color-change: it appears green or blue-green in natural daylight, and shifts to red or purplish-red under incandescent or candlelight. This optical phenomenon — caused by how the stone absorbs light — earned alexandrite the nickname 'emerald by day, ruby by night.' First discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in the 1830s, fine alexandrite remains extremely rare and is one of the most valuable gems per carat.

Stone properties: Believed to inspire intuition and balance, reminding the wearer that transformation is not loss — it is becoming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does alexandrite change color?

Alexandrite contains chromium, which causes it to absorb certain wavelengths of light differently depending on the light source. In daylight (blue-dominant), it appears green; under incandescent light (red-dominant), it appears red or purple.

Is lab alexandrite the same as natural?

Lab alexandrite has the identical chemical composition and color-change properties as natural alexandrite. The difference is origin — one is mined, one is grown. Lab stones are significantly more affordable while offering the same visual effect.

Is lab alexandrite durable for everyday wear?

Alexandrite rates 8.5 on the Mohs hardness scale — excellent for everyday wear. It's one of the more durable colored gemstones available.

Will the color change look different on different people?

The color change is consistent between stones of similar quality, but the intensity can vary. Higher-quality alexandrite shows a more dramatic shift. Lighting conditions — daylight vs. indoor light — make the biggest difference.

Is alexandrite suitable as an engagement ring stone?

Absolutely. Its hardness, rarity, and striking color change make it a meaningful and durable choice for an engagement ring, especially for someone who wants something genuinely unique.
