What Is Moonstone

About Moonstone

Moonstone is a variety of the feldspar mineral group prized for its mesmerizing optical phenomenon called adularescence — a soft, billowing glow that seems to move beneath the surface of the stone as you shift it in the light, like moonlight gliding across water. This ethereal effect is caused by the diffraction of light between alternating layers within the stone. Moonstone comes in white, peach, gray, and the highly sought-after rainbow variety. It's deeply associated with femininity, intuition, and the cycles of the moon.

Stone properties: Said to soothe emotional cycles and gently encourage the wearer to trust what they feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes the glow inside moonstone?

The glow (adularescence) is caused by light scattering between alternating layers of different feldspar minerals inside the stone. It's a purely natural optical effect, not a treatment or coating.

Is moonstone fragile?

Moonstone rates 6–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale and has perfect cleavage in two directions, which means it can chip with a sharp blow. We recommend protective settings (bezel, halo) for everyday rings and mindful wear.

Does moonstone change color?

The body color of moonstone doesn't change, but the adularescence can appear different depending on lighting — it tends to glow more in diffused or low light. Rainbow moonstone shows blue to multicolor schiller effects.

What's the difference between white and rainbow moonstone?

White moonstone typically shows a white or silver glow. Rainbow moonstone (technically labradorite) displays a blue or multicolor flash and is highly popular in jewelry for its vivid optical effect.

How do I care for moonstone?

Clean gently with a damp soft cloth or mild soapy water. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and harsh chemicals. Store carefully as moonstone can be scratched by harder stones.
