Frequently Asked Questions

What causes the star in black star sapphire?
The star (asterism) is caused by microscopic needle-like inclusions of rutile (titanium dioxide) that grow in three directions at 60° angles inside the corundum crystal. When light hits these intersecting needles, it reflects as a six-rayed star.

How many rays does the star have?
Most black star sapphires show six rays. Rare twelve-rayed stars also occur when two sets of inclusions overlap.

Is the star always visible?
The star is most visible under a single, direct light source (like sunlight or a spotlight). In diffused or ambient lighting, it may be less prominent. This is normal and expected.

Is black star sapphire durable?
Yes — it's still corundum, rating 9 on the Mohs scale. The rutile inclusions that create the star are fully enclosed within the crystal and don't affect durability.

Is black star sapphire treated?
Natural black star sapphires are generally not treated (heat treatment would destroy the rutile needles that create the star). What you see is entirely natural.
