What Is Moissanite

About Moissanite

Moissanite is a gemstone born from the stars — it was first discovered in a meteorite crater in 1893 by Nobel Prize-winning scientist Henri Moissan. Today, all moissanite is lab-created and composed of silicon carbide (SiC). With a refractive index higher than diamond, moissanite produces exceptional brilliance and fire — often described as even more sparkly than diamond. Available in colorless and a range of fancy colors, moissanite is a stunning, ethical, and affordable center stone option.

Stone properties: Said to carry cosmic energy, encouraging those who wear it to shine fully and without apology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is moissanite a diamond?

No — moissanite is its own gemstone with a different chemical composition (silicon carbide vs. carbon). However, it is often chosen as a diamond alternative because of its similar appearance, hardness, and brilliance.

How does moissanite compare to diamond in sparkle?

Moissanite has a higher refractive index (2.65 vs. 2.42 for diamond), which means it produces more rainbow-colored 'fire.' Some people love this; others prefer diamond's more white-light brilliance. Both are beautiful.

Is moissanite durable?

Yes. Moissanite rates 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale — harder than any gemstone except diamond — making it an excellent choice for everyday wear.

What colors does moissanite come in?

Colorless moissanite closely resembles a white diamond. Colored moissanite is available in shades including gray, green, yellow, and black. All colors are stable and do not fade.

Can jewelers tell the difference between moissanite and diamond?

Experienced gemologists can distinguish them under magnification. Standard diamond testers may read moissanite as diamond because both conduct heat similarly, but specialized testers can tell them apart.
