What Is Salt & Pepper Diamond

About Salt & Pepper Diamond

Salt & pepper diamonds are natural, earth-mined diamonds that embrace their inclusions — the black carbon spots (pepper) and white or gray feathers (salt) that give each stone its distinctive, organic appearance. Unlike traditional diamonds graded for minimal inclusions, salt & pepper diamonds celebrate imperfection as character. No two are exactly alike: each stone has its own unique map of inclusions, ranging from sparse and delicate to dramatic and galaxy-like. They've become a defining choice in the alternative bridal world for people who want something raw, honest, and truly one of a kind.

Stone properties: Said to reflect the beauty of an honest life — that real, lasting things are never flawless, and that is precisely what makes them extraordinary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are salt & pepper diamonds real diamonds?

Yes — completely. They are natural, earth-mined diamonds with the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale) and chemical composition (pure carbon) as any traditional diamond. The difference is in how their inclusions are viewed: as character rather than flaws.

Why would someone choose a salt & pepper diamond?

For their uniqueness. Every salt & pepper diamond has an unrepeatable pattern of inclusions — no two look the same. Many people also appreciate their lower cost compared to high-clarity diamonds, ethical sourcing transparency, and the philosophy of embracing natural imperfection.

Are salt & pepper diamonds less durable than traditional diamonds?

The hardness is identical (10/10). However, stones with many inclusions near the surface can be slightly more susceptible to chipping from a hard blow. We recommend protective settings for peace of mind.

Will the pattern of inclusions look different over time?

No. The inclusions are a permanent part of the diamond's crystal structure and will not change, move, or fade.

How do I clean a salt & pepper diamond ring?

The same as any diamond — warm soapy water and a soft brush work well. You can also use ultrasonic cleaners, but check with us first if your stone has significant surface-reaching inclusions.
