The star (asterism) is caused by microscopic needle-like inclusions of rutile (titanium dioxide) that grow in three directions at 60° angles inside the corundum crystal. When light hits these intersecting needles, it reflects as a six-rayed star.

How many rays does the star have?

Most black star sapphires show six rays. Rare twelve-rayed stars also occur when two sets of inclusions overlap.

Is the star always visible?

Is black star sapphire durable?
